I really wanted to like this book. I was so excited to read it because it was highly recommended and covered topics I love learning about. However, this book was very uncomfortably woke in areas that it did not need to be. It also supports plant based eating in a way I can’t get behind. If you follow an ancestral or traditional diet this book is not for you. There are a few interesting parts regarding PCOS and fertility but because I can’t get behind a lot of the beliefs in this book it’s hard to trust the author.

AMEN❗️Dr. and Author, Aviva Romm, begins this formidable volume by assuring women that they “are not broken” because of the many symptoms and conditions related to hormones gone rogue in women. Dr. Romm is bold in asserting it’s time for women to get real help, outside the male dominated, convenient type we’ve endured for decades. These “things” are not “all in our heads”. She takes time to debunk what’s been the norm, lay out her approach and declare “being a woman is not a disease”.After the rousing introduction chapter, Romm gets into the medical information and explains how hormones typically work at various stages of a female life. This includes physical, emotional, environmental and historical changes, some of which are quite startling. Romm discusses things like periods, vaginal discharges, ovulation cycles and what they mean or indicate. She uses charts, graphs, self assessment forms and an entire chapter devoted to helping you become your own best advocate.Part 2 is devoted to those items that can help balance your Hormone Intelligence: food, stress, body clock, gut health, detoxification and cellular repair. Each of these categories has a specific effect on hormones and interacts in an unique way which is thoroughly explained including suggestions on how individuals can effect change for themselves, based on their own needs.Part 3 deals with advanced protocols for specific conditions: Periods & PMS, PCOS, Endometriosis, Fertility, Uterine Fibroids, Sexual & Vaginal Health and Perimenopause. This entire section is very pro active and while it does provide the “standard” treatment, Romm focuses on her integrative, wholistic approach and suggests various changes in diet, exercises, tinctures, teas, supplements, etc.The final section includes the recipes which are quite basic. There’s a pantry of ingredients provided that will make cooking simpler. Most ingredients can be sourced from large stores or a WholeFoods type place. Experienced cooks will be fine with this minimalist approach; newbies might have some issues. There are no nutritional values provided, which I found disturbing from a medical professional. The last item in this section is a Botanical & Supplement Quick Reference Guide which I found really useful.Basic Hormone Balancing, Love Your Gut, Quick and Easy, Detox and Plant Based Vegan are the menus provided in the book. It’s a start but you’ll want to supplement this with a good vegan or plant based cookbook to avoid boredom once you’ve worked thru this program. This is not the strongest part of the book but that’s easily remedied.An excellent resource for the legions of women who’ve been fighting this battle for years. I, for one, am happy to have both the reference book and the advocateđź“š
